Children need different things from education at different ages.
In the earliest years, understanding often begins through experience. Children touch, move, listen, imitate, experiment and play.
As they grow, they become increasingly able to work with abstract ideas, sustain concentration, organise information, consider different perspectives and take responsibility for their learning.
Our role is not to hold children in one way of learning.
It is to recognise when they are ready for what comes next.
That means making room for exploration and explicit teaching. Creativity and knowledge. Collaboration and independent work. Questions and the discipline required to pursue an answer properly.
Joy and rigour belong in the same education.

The pathway is intended to progress towards the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP).
Progress doesn't look identical for every child.
Children bring different strengths, interests and ways of approaching a challenge.
Our role is to understand those differences without lowering expectations.
Teachers observe, listen, document and assess children's learning in ways appropriate to their stage, using what they discover to decide what should happen next.
As children grow, they become increasingly involved in that process themselves: reflecting on their work, recognising where they need support and understanding what they are ready to attempt next.
High expectations. Thoughtful support. Individual progress.
Assessment should tell us what to do next.
Assessment at VLC changes as children grow.
In the early years, teachers learn a great deal through observation, conversation, children's work and the ways children approach experiences and problems.
As learning becomes more structured, assessment does too.
But the fundamental questions remain useful ones:
What does this child understand?
Where are the misconceptions?
What progress have they made?
What are they ready for next?
Assessment shouldn't simply produce information about a child.
It should improve the learning that follows.
